Staying in Italy you have to visit Sorrento, a beautiful city in south of Italy, in the region of Campania. Famous for its typical products like limoncello, colorful local traditions and breathtaking views. But not only. The azure sky and crystal clear water from centuries invite tourists from all over the world. Or is there something else?
In fact this ancient Greek city take the name from word Syrenusion or Syreon which literally means “The land of the Sirens”, for probably it is a home place of sirens who with their beautiful songs lead the ships to their doom. Indeed the great Homer in his “Odyssey” wrote about their beautiful but misleading singing to which Odysseus escaped while swimming across the Sorrento Gulf. And so the myth of Sorrento Sirens is one of ancient believes of local tradition and culture, seems those delightful creatures have chosen the Sorrento as their dwelling place. According to ancient historic exactly here in this amazing spot was located a Temple of the Sirens, which actual location till today remains a mystery.
The presence of those legendary beings appears in writing of many ancient historians and philosophers, such as Heraclitus of Ephesus, Strabo, Virgil, Cicero who considered them as s symbol of eloquence and knowledge. Their myth has evaluated as the time passed by, the variations of legend changed several times the dwelling place of those mysterious half women – half fishes, but originally it was supposed to be the Gallo Islands, in ancient times called “Le sirenuse”.
Also the appearance of sirens changed. Although dismay created the lovely picture of young girl with fish tail n a place of legs, completely harmless being, the original image is far from this idea. As a personification of sea dangers the ancient sirens where described as a rapturous birds with women faces. Most famous of those fabulous being in mythological literature were called: Partenope, Leucosia and Ligia. The legend that lives in Sorrento for over 30 centuries, inspirited painters, writers and poets, such as lord Byron, Goethe, Wagner and Ibsen. The legend together with breathtaking landscapes, blue of sky and sea, gentle breeze from Mediterranean sea makes Sorrento one of most romantic places in a world. Charming dreamy sea lit by red sunsets, stormy mornings with raging sea.
