A Simple Tourist and Hotels Guide to the Town of Oban

Oban HotelsOban is a beautiful fishing town neatly nestled where spectacular rolling mountains and the sparkling coastal waters meet. Oban means “little bay” in Gaelic – Scotland’s ancient Celtic language. True to its name, it has served as an important gateway and supply line to the islands. During its prime, a regular steamship line servicing direct trips to Glasgow was the pride of Oban.

Today, Oban is considered the capital town of the Western Highlands as it is the focal point of the commercial and tourism industry in the area. Ferries and boats now regularly sail to many of the Inner Hebrides where travelers take advantage of the available travel routes.

For many centuries, Oban has been a favorite destination for painters, authors, composers and poets because of the breathtaking mountain views, scenic locks and magical islands. It has never lost the enchantment as it is still frequented by artists to this day. It maintains a comfortable position as a hotspot for travelers wishing to explore the West Highlands. Once, it had even received the royal seal of approval when Queen Victoria called it “one of the finest spots we have ever seen.”

Being a true tourism haven, this town offers a wide array of shops, restaurants and other attractions such as swimming polls and other sports facilities. Oban has several local Marinas with available charter facilities to accommodate those who wish to explore more of the loveliest sceneries accessible only by boat. Cruise liners also occasionally grace the hilly backdrop as they anchor out in the Firth and Lorne.

Oban boasts of all types of accommodation that caters to different tastes, budgets and inclinations. 4 star hotels, guest houses, traditional bed and breakfast, self catering cottages are only a few of the choices available. Choices are also available to stay in a chalet, farm house or flat. There are even charter boats, caravans and camping parks and motor home rentals for the more adventurous.
